Frequently Asked Questions

About Pzizz

What is Pzizz?

Sleep at the push of a button! We help people beat insomnia and get great sleep with our iOS and Android apps.

How long has Pzizz been around?

Since 1999. Before the apps we had a hardware version and desktop software.

What was the inspiration for creating Pzizz?

We had our own troubles with sleep, and realized the problem is much bigger than just us. Poor sleep has been declared a public health epidemic by the CDC. 60MM people in the US, 31% of Europe and 2 billion people globally suffer from insomnia.

The key insight is when we realized there’s a better way to getting great sleep without using pills or medications;that sound can have a huge impact in helping us get to sleep fast and wake up feeling refreshed and energized.

How does Pzizz work?

To understand how, you first have to understand why. The vast majority of cases of people suffering from insomnia are caused by a disease called, “too much thinking;” people lie awake at night unable to shut off their brains. So the key is if you can calm the mind, you can induce sleep. That’s what Pzizz does. Based on the latest clinical research, our patented system plays you a sleep-optimized mix of music, voiceover, and sound effects that quickly quiet your mind, put you to sleep, keep you asleep, and wake you up feeling refreshed. Learn more about the science behind Pzizz.

Is there real science behind it?

Yes. We’ve had initial clinical validation and spend a great deal of time turning academic and clinical research into reality. Check out the science behind Pzizz on our blog for more information.

What’s a Dreamscape?

‘Dreamscape’ is our fancy word for the specialized background sound effects and music that help put you to sleep. There are many, many different types of dreamscapes that are included in Pzizz, so each time you use the app you’ll have a new experience, which is very important in ensuring Pzizz stays effective for you over time.

Who should use Pzizz?

  • People who have trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking up feeling refreshed.
  • People who feel tired during the middle of the day and are open to using a quick nap to boost their energy levels.
  • Anyone who wants better sleep, even if you think you get good sleep now, as Pzizz can improve every aspect of your rest.
  • People who want to get in the zone and be more productive.

How much does Pzizz cost?

Pzizz is free to download and offers access to "Classic Pzizz" content and features at no charge. To gain full access to all Pzizz content and features, you will need to purchase Pzizz Pro, available from our website or as an in-app purchase (see what's Free vs Pro here). For current pricing, see our buy page.

Our mission is to bring great sleep to the world. We wish we could do that without charging for our service, but it costs quite a bit to develop and maintain apps, create on-going music and narration content, do research, and pay for all the staff that make Pzizz a reality.

That being said, we never like to hear about people having financial difficulties. If you can't afford Pzizz but feel you would still really benefit, please email us at support@pzizz.com and we'll work something out with you.

How do you pronounce Pzizz?

"Puh-ziz." Here's a short video on exactly how it's done.

Using Pzizz

Can Pzizz be used on children?

Lots of Pzizz users have reported great success with using it on children. Actually one Washington D.C. based teacher found it worked really well to give her class a nap.

How to best listen to Pzizz?

Many users find it works for them just using the built-in phone speaker. There are some drawbacks to doing that in terms of sound quality and rendering;there are things we are doing in the audio that can't be perceived that well (or at all) without good quality stereo sound (preferably earbuds or headphones). But the most important thing is to find something comfortable that works for you.

Best headphones/earbuds for sleep?

If normal headphones/earbuds bother you during sleep, you can try various types of "sleep headphones." We wrote an in-depth article looking at different options. Click here to read it.

Should I listen to Pzizz the whole nap/night?

For optimal effectiveness you should listen to it for the entire duration of sleep;it will help you stay asleep and wake up feeling refreshed. If for some reason you prefer not to, we built fade out timers into the app that will allow you to fade Pzizz to silence after a period of time.

How quickly will Pzizz work?

For most people it should work pretty well the first time you use it. A number of people have reported however that they needed to use it for a few nights before they started realizing the benefits. Our recommendation is to give it a try for seven days, and see how it changes your sleep for the better.

How do I switch narrations/gender?

You can switch between different narration scripts from within the Pzizz settings by scrolling down to the "Sleep Settings" and tapping on "Narration." Here's a short video demonstration showing how it's done.

Each narration has both 'male' and 'female' options which you can switch between from the playback screen as well as control the voiceover volume separately from the dreamscape (music) volume.

How do I control the duration of the music and/or voice playback?

In the settings there are "fadeout timers" for music and voice. You can adjust these to control how long in to your session the music or voice plays for before shutting off. If you want the music to play the whole night just turn the music fadeout timer "off."

How do I snooze/cancel an alarm on an iOS device?

For devices with 3D/Force Touch capabilities:
  • When your alarm goes off, Force Touch on the alarm notification (either from your lockscreen or from the notification center) and you will be shown the options to "snooze" or "cancel" the alarm.
For devices that don't have Force Touch capabilities:
  • When the alarm goes off, long-hold on the alarm notification (either from your lockscreen or from the notification center) and you will be shown the options to "snooze" or "cancel" the alarm.
  • When the alarm goes off, swipe left on the alarm notification (either from your lockscreen or from the notification center), tap on "view" and you will then be shown the options to "snooze" or "cancel" the alarm.

How do I use Siri shortcuts to start Pzizz?

Pzizz can now be opened and started with a Siri shortcut!
Here's how you can set it up in just a few simple steps:
  • On your iOS device, go to Settings > Siri & Search.
  • You'll see three suggested shortcuts. Tap "All Shortcuts" to see more actions from different apps. Find Pzizz and tap on it.
  • Tap on an action you would like to record a shortcut for.
  • To record a personal phrase, tap on the record icon. Try to record a simple phrase that you'll remember (e.g. "Put me to sleep").
  • Tap Done. You're all set!
How to run the custom shortcut with Siri
After you add a shortcut to Siri on your iOS device, you can run the shortcut by asking Siri your personal phrase on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch running iOS 12 or later.
Just say "Hey Siri," then say the personal phrase you created for the shortcut. e.g. "Hey Siri, put me to sleep".
Troubleshooting.
Don't see the shortcut that you want to use?
You will need to open Pzizz and perform the action before it appears in the suggested list of shortcuts. For example, if you want to set a shortcut to Focus, you will first need to open Pzizz and run a Focus session before it appears as an option to add a shortcut to.

General Instruction Guide

Introduction
Pzizz plays you a sleep-optimized mix of music, voiceover, and sound effects that changes each night, that will quickly quiet your mind, put you to sleep, keep you asleep, and wake you up feeling refreshed.
We combine the science of psycho-acoustics, clinical sleep interventions, and personalization through learning algorithms to give you great sleep. It’s relaxing, incredibly effective, and clinically proven.
Quick Start
Just pick a module and play. All you need to do is listen to Pzizz and be guided to sleep. You can wear headphones/earbuds for optimal effectiveness, or just listen to it over speaker if that's more comfortable.
Settings
After you choose a module, you can adjust various settings by clicking the upper right gear icon on the timer screen or the gear icon in the playback controls.
Audio Controls
While you are pzizzing you have the ability to adjust the voice volume and gender, as well as the music volume directly on the playback screen. If you pause the session, the ‘skip’ button will change to give you the option to ‘restart’ your pzizz. Additionally you can access the ‘settings’ through the gear icon.
Dreamscapes
‘Dreamscape’ is our word for the specialized background sound effects and music that help put you to sleep. We compose every dreamscape ourselves with our in-house staff based upon effective principles in psycho-acoustics (the branch of psychology that deals with sound perception and its physiological effects).
Dreamscapes have four sections: an ‘introduction’ which captures your attention enough to calm your mind;a ‘falling’ sequence (short for falling asleep) that draws you deeper and deeper into sleep;a ‘sleeping’ sequence that keeps you asleep;and a ‘waking’ portion that takes three minutes to gently bring you back up from slumber.
Uniquely, Pzizz’s algorithm can mix and match different sections from different dreamscapes to give you a unique experience each time (shuffle mode), which is very important in ensuring Pzizz stays effective.
While playing a session, you can choose to ‘skip’ if you’d like to hear a different dreamscape.
If on the other hand you don’t like the dreamscape you are listening to and never want to hear it again click the ‘thumbs down’ button and it will exclude that dreamscape section from future playback.
A full list of the dreamscape sections you’ve thumbed down is available in your settings menu.
Narrations
Our voice scripts are based on a variety of techniques: progressive relaxation, hypnosis, breathing exercises, guided imagery, meditation, mindfulness, heart rate variability breathing, cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), autogenic training, neuro-linguistic programming, storytelling, and poetry.
It’s truly a mixture of different aspects of art and science, and just like the dreamscapes, many of the narration scripts have multiple variations, so every time you use them you’ll hear a different sequence, automatically.
If you’d like to learn about the science behind the narrations, check this out.
Playing a Specific Dreamscape
The list of dreamscapes is available in the settings under ‘Dreamscapes.’ You can sort them alphabetically or by release date by clicking the upper right icon. Clicking any particular dreamscape will play you a preview of the intro section, as well as display a description.
A word of caution when using Pzizz to play a specific dreamscape (instead of random or shuffle): for some people playing the same dreamscape night after night can cause it to lose effectiveness, so definitely allow yourself to explore and experience different dreamscapes over time.
Favorites
At the end of your pzizz, you can ‘favorite’ it, which will save it to your favorites list and allow you to listen to that exact pzizz again. Your favorites are accessible through the ‘favorite’ icon on the bottom right of the homescreen (which will only show once you favorite at least one session). You can delete a favorite by swiping left, which will reveal the delete button. Additionally you can also favorite from the history menu by clicking the star icon next to a session entry.
History
In the sidebar menu, you can access your ‘history,’ which is a list of your completed sessions ordered by time. You can easily view the rating and favorite any entry, and if you tap a particular session it will allow you to play back that exact pzizz again.
Ratings
At the end of your session you’ll have the chance to rate how well it went. We use your ratings to continually improve the experience for you, so please take the quick moment to give the feedback! Ratings can be disabled in the settings.
Sleep Headphones
If listening to Pzizz over the phone speaker isn’t effective for you and normal headphones/earbuds bother you during sleep, you can try various types of “sleep headphones.” We wrote an in-depth article looking at different options. Click here to read it.
Science
Is there real science behind Pzizz? Yes! Read all about it on our blog. We spend a lot of time researching, designing, iterating and testing the content to make it as effective as possible.
Focus Module
The focus module is music designed to help you get more work done.
Built around ‘focuscapes,’ we’ve created environments of sound that help you get in the zone and be productive, backed by the same thorough research we use to create our dreamscapes.
Each focuscape has a ‘focus’ section which gets you into full concentration and a ‘cool down’ section which brings you back out gently.
Pro tip: in the settings for the Focus Module there is the ability to choose how often you want to ‘switch,’ meaning how long you want a focuscape to play until it switches to another focuscape. Some people like to listen to the same thing for hours, some people like to change it up more often. Experiment and find what works for you.
Misc. Info
*If you select a session that is less than 10 minutes in any module, the ‘waking’ or ‘cool down’ sections will not play.
*On iOS, you can force touch on the alarm notification to choose to snooze or stop the alarm right from the notification. For devices that don’t have force touch, you can left swipe and tap “View.”
*We publish new dreamscapes, narrations, and focuscapes on an ongoing basis that get included automatically in the app. Check out the ‘product’ section of our blog to see the list of updates

About Sleeping

What are the benefits to getting a good sleep?

Sleep is considered, along with nutrition and exercise, one of the ‘three pillars of health.’ Getting better sleep will generally help practically every area of your life (sounds like common sense right? You’d be surprised). Specifically, research suggests the following:
  • Improve memory
  • Reinforce practiced skills
  • Live longer
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Reduce inflammation
  • Increase creativity
  • Higher athletic performance
  • Reduce attention deficit
  • Improve reaction speed
  • Lose weight easier
  • Lower stress levels
  • Avoid accidents
  • Ward off depression
  • Better sex life
  • Lower pain threshold (less pain)
  • Lower risk of injury
  • Clearer thinking
  • Stronger immune system
The list really goes on and on… moral of the story: embrace your sleep! Also, watch this TED Talk on the topic.

How does sleep work?

The two main types of sleep are rapid-eye-movement (REM) sleep and non-rapid-eye-movement (NREM) sleep.
  • NREM is broken into three segments: Stage 1 ( known as N1), Stage 2 (N2), and Stage 3 (N3). REM also has segments, although they are rarely written about and not useful to talk about for our purposes (and I’m sure you’re just dying to know).
  • A breakdown of the phases:
  • Stage 1-Drowsy, relaxed state between being awake and nodding off. Your breathing slows, and blood pressure decreases. About ~5% of total sleep time.
  • Stage 2-Light sleep;your body temperature cools and heart rate drops. You become disengaged with your surroundings, although you can generally still easily be woken up. About ~45% of sleep time.
  • Stage 3-Deep sleep;it’s very hard to wake up from this state. A number of restorative processes happen in the body that help healing, memory and more. About ~25% of sleep time.
  • REM-Heart and respiration rates increase and become irregular. Your body paralyzes itself to inhibit movement. Your body temperature further decreases. Most of your dreams happen in this state. Interestingly, unlike Stages 1-3, brain activity in REM looks very similar to being awake. About ~25% of sleep time.
  • A typical night’s sleep goes like this: we enter into N1, which initially lasts a few minutes, then quickly move to N2, then N3, back to N2, and then REM. This whole cycle takes about 90 minutes. As the night progresses, we spend less time in N3, and predominately keep switching between N2 and REM (and REM duration gets longer and longer). Here’s what it looks like on a graph:

How fast should I fall asleep?

The average person falls asleep in about 14 minutes. A “normal” healthy range is thought to be about 5-10 minutes (if you fall asleep too quickly that could be a sign that you’re not sleeping enough), although again, it varies significantly from person to person.

What is the optimal length for a great nap?

It varies from person to person, but research suggests approximately 20 minutes is the perfect amount of time;the best thing to do is to start with that and then experiment with different lengths and find out what works for you. Just be careful not to nap so long that you go into stages of deep sleep;waking up from that part of your sleep cycle will often leave you feeling groggy instead of refreshed!

How long should I sleep for?

  1. Older Adults (above 65 years old)
    • Recommended: 7-8 hours
    • May be appropriate: 5-9 hours
  2. Adults (18-64 years old)
    • Recommended: 7-9 hours
    • May be appropriate: 6-11 hours
  3. Teenager (14-17 years old)
    • Recommended: 8-10 hours

    • May be appropriate: 8-14 hours
  6. Toddler (1-2 years old)
